Volkswagen Group of America will soon have a new leader, and he'll be the first American citizen to take the position in 25 years.

The company announced Wednesday it tapped Scott Keogh to become president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America as well as head of the Volkswagen brand for the North American region.

Keogh has served as the president of Audi of America since 2012 and, according to the company, helped the brand double sales from 2010 to 2015.

Keogh will replace Hinrich Woebcken, who's overseen Volkswagen's U.S. operations since April 2016. Volkswagen credits him with leading "the successful transformation of Volkswagen in North America," and he will remain with the company as an adviser.

The move is Volkswagen's latest effort to accelerate its sales, which took a massive hit after the company admitted to cheating U.S. diesel emissions tests.

Keogh will assume his new role next month.
