Parkland Families Sue Companies That Made, Sold Gun Used In Shooting

The families of two students killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida are suing the company that made the gun used in the attack and the store that reportedly sold it to the shooter.

According to several reports, the parents of Jaime Guttenberg and Alex Schachter filed a lawsuit Wednesday against American Outdoor Brands and Sunrise Tactical Supply.

NBC quotes the lawsuit as saying the families are looking to hold the defendants "legally responsible for their complicity in the entirely foreseeable, deadly use of the assault-style weapons that they place on the market."

But the outlet notes the suit could serve another purpose as well. 

A Florida law currently bars state and local governments from filing lawsuits against gun sellers if their products are used unlawfully. Attorneys for the families hope to challenge that law.

Seventeen people were killed during the Feb. 14 shooting. American Outdoor Brands and Sunrise Tactical Supply have yet to comment on the lawsuit.
