President Donald Trump wanted the Justice Department to prosecute two of his political rivals, according to The New York Times.

The Times reports that in the spring, Trump told former White House lawyer Don McGahn that he wanted to order federal prosecutions of Hillary Clinton and former FBI Director James Comey.

In response, McGahn reportedly told Trump he couldn't do that and that even requesting such an investigation could lead to impeachment or other consequences.

Trump has repeatedly called for legal action against Clinton, primarily because of her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. Trump has also claimed Comey leaked classified information.

In a statement, an attorney for McGahn said that to his client's knowledge, the president never ordered that anyone prosecute Clinton or Comey.
