Major League Baseball has pushed back Opening Day until at least mid-May due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, the league said Monday it had decided to further postpone its 2020 season after the CDC advised against gatherings of 50 or more people for at least eight weeks.

The statement also said each team is committed to playing as many games as possible once the season gets started. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters that owners are still hopeful that a full 162-game season is possible.

The news comes just days after the MLB canceled the rest of spring training in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The league says it will keep fans updated about the 2020 schedule in the coming days and weeks.
