"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism; nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism."

French President Emmanuel Macron decried nationalism in an Armistice Day speech before world leaders, including President Donald Trump. Macron said by embracing the self-interest of nationalism, countries betray their core values.

While Macron did not name the U.S. president in his speech, Trump has repeatedly referred to himself as a nationalist over the past few weeks, and several outlets described Macron's remarks as a rebuke of Trump's approach.

President Trump was one of two world leaders notably absent from a procession that walked down the Champs-Elysees to the tomb of the unknown soldier before the ceremony. He and Russian President Vladimir Putin each arrived at the ceremony in their own motorcades instead.

Macron and Trump met the day before the ceremony and roughly agreed European countries should contribute more to NATO. That meeting came after friction over Macron's comment that Europe needed its own military force to defend against unpredictability from the U.S., Russia and China, something Trump called "very insulting."
