On Friday, a federal judge ruled e-cigarette companies have 10 months to submit applications to keep their products on the market.

This all stems from a lawsuit. Anti-tobacco groups took the FDA to court last year for delaying a review of e-cigarettes.

The FDA suggested the 10-month timeline after a U.S. district judge ruled it had acted illegally by letting e-cigarettes stay on the market until 2022 before applying for FDA approval. The agency had previously proposed companies should have until August 2021 to submit an application.

Vaping products, including e-cigarettes, have become increasingly popular among young people, including middle and high school-aged kids.

After a company submits an application, its products will be allowed to stay on the market for up to a year while the FDA reviews it.
