The Department of Homeland Security is extending protections for more than 1,000 Yemeni citizens currently living in the U.S.

Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen made the announcement that around 1,250 Yemenis would have Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, for an additional 18 months, or until March 3, 2020.

The Trump administration recently decided not to extend TPS for thousands of people, including Syrians, Haitians and Hondurans. And the extension for Yemeni citizens only covers those who have lived in the U.S. since Jan. 4, 2017 and been present in the country since March 4, 2017. That leaves around 400 Yemenis at risk for deportation.

Yemen's ongoing civil war has spiraled into a devastating humanitarian crisis, with millions of people at risk of starvation.
