An armed militia group detained nearly 300 people at the U.S.-Mexico border this week, according to New Mexico's attorney general.

The group call themselves the United Constitutional Patriots and told The New York Times that their actions are like "a verbal citizen's arrest." They've posted videos of themselves detaining migrants at gunpoint before handing them over to U.S. Border Patrol.

Attorney General Hector Balderas issued a statement saying that "These individuals should not attempt to exercise authority reserved for law enforcement."

The ACLU of New Mexico agrees with the attorney general, but they want him and the governor to use their authority to stop the militia. The civil liberties group sent a letter asking the officials to investigate immediately, saying: "We cannot allow racist and armed vigilantes to kidnap and detain people seeking asylum."
