White House Looks To Divert Foreign Aid To Mexico For Deportations

The State Department is reportedly looking to send Mexico $20 million to help with deportations. 

The New York Times reports the administration wants to divert that money from funds Congress originally designated for foreign aid. 

The Department of Homeland Security says the money would stop more people from getting to the U.S.-Mexico border to begin with. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen met with Mexico's current foreign minister Wednesday. 

Mexico's government is currently in transition - President-Elect Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador takes office in December. So it's unclear to what extent the next government will cooperate.

Obrador's chosen interior minister said on Thursday the new administration will not be the U.S.'s police.
